Walking through this small gorge was such a peaceful and relaxing experience that you should definitely try, if you love to watch the river flow while walking. The flowing water along the trail was so therapeutic! We walked around 1 1/2 hour accompanied by the sound of the river and a few crows! We are constantly exploring new places around Crete and this one was a pleasant surprise for us!
This beautiful gorge is located near a small village in the region of Chania, named Topolia. This place is not so famous and the length of the gorge is quite short -about 1,5km long- , so we recommend this trail if you are not an expert hiker and you wish to admire the impeccable nature of Crete! You may have a hard time to find where the trail path starts, due to the lack of street signs. It’s always a good idea to ask a local to guide you (or just join us in our next trip there!)
We reached our destination after about one hour drive from the town of Chania. We parked our car at the backyard of an old abandoned building which used to be a school and we started our hiking! We did this trip in the first days of spring. The snow on the summits had start to melting and a small river has created into the gorge. The path moves across the river and it is quite easy and distinct. It allows you to enjoy the glory of this location. Huge maple trees, still leafless but very soon they will be green again.
The gorge is from 5m to 50m wide and attains a depth of over 300m. You will also find many small caves, where goats or birds find a home! Take your time to soak up everything that nature has to offer in this little retreat and maybe do some of your meditation exercises!
